Friends of Parkside School and Molotlegi Malebye Primary School Working Together for a Better Future

This year Friends of Parkside School is helping to raise funds for Molotlegi Malebye Primary School in South Africa.

Why support this school?

This school has been chosen as a teacher at Parkside has close connections here and has identified the need for support. We know that all the money raised will directly benefit these children. Mrs Anne Nkosi visits the school twice a year. Her husband’s family live near this village and Anne has close ties with the local church and Mrs Lehutso, a teacher at the school (pictured above 3rd from left).

School Location

The school is situated in the north west province in the small village of Mmtong near the town of Swardtam. The closest main town is Makapanstad. There are approximately 200, 6-18 year olds attending this school. Class sizes vary but are usually around 45 pupils.

Letters

Children at Parkside have already started building up a relationship with these pupils. They write to each other once a term.

Village Life

Some children travel up to 7 miles by foot to school. Others come from Mmtong and surrounding villages. Many come from large families whose parent/s may be unemployed and struggling to make ends meet.

Education

The children are taught all the regular academic subjects such as English, Maths etc. and some non-academic ones too. Pupils love playing sports such as netball and football but it is hard as they only have limited resources.

Food

The pupils are fed once a day at school. This meal is basic and usually consists of soup, possibly bread and some water to drink. The local church (pictured left) provide one meal a week for the children. This food is very often the only nourishment that the children receive all day.

School facilities

The facilities are basic. There is no running water at the school and even though some lights are fitted in the classrooms there is no electricity supply at present.

What are we hoping to provide?

We hope to provide these children with resources and new facilities which will enhance their education and give them a chance to have a better future. We hope to be able to do this by starting to raise funds for the following: a library and books and a safe fenced off playground and sports fields.

We would like to say on behalf of the children at Molotlegi Malebye Primary School a very big thank you for your support and we look forward to keeping you updated on our progress.
