Boys have many opportunities to develop their musical talent and performance ability both inside School and at external events.

More than a third of boys learn to play a musical instrument and there are also good opportunities for boys to perform in groups: Big Band; Jazz Orchestra; Choir; and Saxophone/Clarinet groups, to name a few.

Pupils are entered for public school scholarships after discussion with the instrumental teacher, parent and headmaster. Public school requires at least Grade 5 standard on one instrument and Grade 4 on a second. Music scholars are listed on the honours board in the music room.

Speech and Drama are also an integral part of the curriculum and many boys take part in a number of school productions. The Speech and Drama Department at Parkside maintains an ethos of being inclusive but still having high expectations of the pupils.

Performing Arts is an integral part of school life at Parkside. Boys absolutely love their weekly drama lessons where they are given the opportunity to explore a wide range of skills.

All boys take part and make progress regardless of their level of confidence. The drama classroom is a place where all our pupils thrive! There is respect, encouragement, discipline and purpose. This feeds into the wider school curriculum setting up the pathway for Parkside boys to become confident speakers and able team players.

Each year we aim to provide a range of performance opportunities for the boys and currently offer:

  • LAMDA Exams
  • A Poetry Competition for each year group
  • Drama Activities
  • Productions or Informal Performance evenings throughout the school
  • Movement workshops

Performing Art at Parkside is vibrant and current. We welcome travelling theatre companies as visits to the theatre. We encourage our most able students to enter in for Scholarship Drama opportunities at their chosen senior schools and feel proud of the recent success or our boys in this area. You only have to spend a few minutes in any drama class to know that Speech and Drama is something that is supported and enjoyed by all!
